The Pyramids from Hurghada: by plane or by road, and which museum
Cairo and back in a day is possible from Hurghada. Two decisions shape it: thirteen hours by air or eighteen by road, and the Grand Egyptian Museum or the old one on Tahrir Square.
Every one of our Cairo day trips takes you to the Pyramids and the Sphinx with a licensed Egyptologist, with lunch at a local restaurant and entry to the named sites in the price, and brings you back to your hotel the same night. Two decisions shape the day.
Decision one: by air or by road
Cairo by plane is a short transfer to Hurghada airport and a flight each way. There is no night drive at either end and more of the day is spent at the Pyramids: about thirteen hours instead of eighteen.
Cairo by coach goes by road on a full-size coach at the group price. It is eighteen hours from pick-up to drop-off, which is as long as anything we sell — read that number before you book it. Cairo VIP makes the same road journey in a smaller minibus.
Decision two: which museum
Most of our Cairo days pair the Pyramids with the Grand Egyptian Museum. If you would rather see the historic building and the collection as it was arranged for a century, the flying day with the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square swaps one for the other. Which museum you want is the only decision on that page.
What to bring
- Your passport — it is checked at the checkpoints.
- Comfortable shoes you can walk all day in, a hat, sunglasses and sun cream.
- A light jacket for the early start.
- Cash for extras: going inside a pyramid, drinks with lunch and camel or horse rides at the Pyramids are not in the price.
Luxor is the other long day worth making from Hurghada — both are on the day trips page, and the Cairo by Plane and Luxor pairing takes in both.
